HRM Programmes

Some of the dedicated programmes from the team at HRM

Memory Lane

The MTW Trust approached the Hospital Radio with a request that we produce a radio programme to support their work with Dementia patients and those challenged with memory issues.

We recognised this was a broad remit covering many complex issues but it struck us that we all enjoy talking about the good old days, and, for many people facing memory loss, it is far easier to engage in conversation about things that happened years ago rather than what happened yesterday!

And have you noticed there are some songs you instinctively know that were around when you were young? You may not know today’s pop chart but you can still sing all the words from a song released sixty years ago.

So the format of the programme began to take shape – a collection of easy listening tunes you don’t usually hear on today’s fast talking pop radio – music from the big bands, crooners like Bing Crosby and Sinatra, well known, easy listening classical tunes, songs from the musicals, songs we knew as kids and catchy songs from the good old days from the likes of Cilla Black and Doris Day.

We also found some old TV adverts – remember Pepsodent Toothpaste, The Bisto Kids, Cadbury’s Smash, C&A or “A Tiger In Your Tank”?

We’ve also put together a collection of memories of life as it used to be – a life before Health & Safety was a thing – a time before mobile phones and computers.

Memories of the outside loo, smoking in public places, playing in the street, or queuing to use a telephone box?

So MEMORY LANE has evolved into a collection of MUSIC & MEMORIES from Yesterday!

And the programme has proved very popular with our regular listeners – memory issues or not!

It’s something you won’t hear anywhere else. You will soon be singing along and recalling “the good old days” and if you are a dementia carer – there will be plenty to stimulate memories and conversation.

So just click the listen button and enjoy MEMORY LANE – Tuesday Afternoon’s 2.00 to 4.00 pm
